Wilson Elementary First Graders Win Regional Math Tournament, Advance to State Competition

The South Jefferson Central School District is proud to announce that three Maynard P. Wilson Elementary first-grade students secured the top spot in the First in Math/NYSED Regional Tournament.
Students Logan Fraser, Hudson Gianfagna and Dylan Reid placed first overall among all first-grade competitors in the region, which includes participants from 32 counties across New York State. Their outstanding performance not only earned top honors but also secured a $1,000 prize for Wilson Elementary School.
The tournament is part of a partnership between First in Math and the New York State Education Department (NYSED), designed to promote mathematical fluency and problem-solving skills through engaging, game-based learning.
“For our first year participating, this is an incredible accomplishment for our students and the South Jeff community,” said Jen Fraser, PK–5 Instructional Math Coach, who organized the district’s involvement in the tournament. “It’s been so rewarding to see the excitement and enthusiasm around math in our building. I’m extremely proud of the students who took part and excited to see our three winning first graders show off their talent at the state level.”
With their regional victory, Logan, Hudson, and Dylan will advance to the state competition, which will take place in Albany on June 13.
